Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in Canada and the US, and the growing toll of opioid-related morbidity and mortality requires a diversity of novel therapeutic and harm reduction-based interventions. This presentation will provide an evidence-based rationale for cannabis-based interventions in the opioid overdose crisis informed by research on substitution effect and the results of the Tilray Patient Survey 2017.

A discussion on the main issues surrounding medical cannabis for pets. This will include how the current (and future) legal environment affects our ability to prescribe and access cannabis & hemp products, the dangers to pets including THC toxicity, and the potential uses of cannabis based veterinary medicines.

Dr. Sarah Silcox is a pioneer in the world of veterinary cannabis use, and is one of the founding directors, and the current President of the Canadian Association of Veterinary Cannabinoid Medicine

A small animal veterinarian with over 20 years of clinical experience, Dr. Silcox has been active in both general and emergency practice, founded her region’s first holistic pet care practice, and is currently operating the region’s first veterinary practice dedicated to palliative, hospice, and end-of-life care for pets.

Her veterinary services are in high demand due, not only to the compassion she shows to both her patients and their families, but the wide range of veterinary treatments offered.  These include acupuncture, spinal manipulation (or chiropractic), laser therapy, homeopathy, dietary consultation, and herbal therapy to provide her patients with a truly integrated approach to veterinary care.

A passionate advocate for the veterinary use of cannabis and cannabinoid medicine, her interest in the potential benefits of medical cannabis for pets reaches back several years.   She is eagerly anticipating changes in legislation, which will allow further studies in this area, and improve her clients’ access to such a valuable herbal medicine for pets.
